Still Learning!

I participated in a tournament this weekend and it was amazing for me! I fought in full contact kick-boxing for the first time, and I loved it! I have been practicing MA’s for about fifteen years and it is very exciting that I am still discovering new aspects of it, and of myself. I feel like a white belt again!
At tournaments, I now have experience in the following:

  • Forms
  • Point sparring
  • Continuous sparring
  • Full contact kick-boxing
  • Demonstration

For those who are interested in the tournament circuit, I will break down the various categories. Keep in mind that most schools will focus primarily on one aspect of a tournament

  • Forms: Empty-handed or weapons. Traditional/Creative/Extreme. Musical/non-musical
  • Sparring: Point, Continuous, Team
  • Kick-boxing: American, International, Muy Thai
  • Demo: Group performance

Of course this is just a basic break-down. Each category has its own rules and guidelines that must be followed. Additionally, each one has its own expertise and focus. Tournaments are a great teaching tool for Martial Artists. The experience of performing under pressure aids a person in overcoming their fears, much like a self-defense situation. While success in tournaments does not guarantee and ability to protect oneself, certain aspects of them can be carried over to other parts of training, and life.

Fresh Start

I have been gone for a while concentrating on my training and my small business. We have engaged in a full year’s tournament season this year. Participating in that many tournaments is new to me and the training schedule is hectic. Things are really picking up and I am focused on learning all I can about running a successful MA school.

I decided to change the format of the website as I have severely neglected it for quite some time. My goal was to keep it simple in a way that would not require me to spend much time maintaining it. I hope that the new format will encourage people to take the time to submit the questionnaire. Short of meeting every interested party in person, this is the best way I could some up with to give people the assistance they deserve. I really just want to spend time giving assistance via the internet that I am able to give when I teach.  Depending on how many take advantage of this opportunity, I may be spending a considerable amount of time reviewing submissions and giving advice.  I would consider this time well spent.

I hope that there are many people out there who are willing to take the time to find out if Martial Arts is right for them.

On a side note: I  started using a workout book in the last 5 weeks and have seen tremendous results. I have always put together my own workouts but found it time to have something a little more structured

It is so effective that I bought the women’s versions for my mom. She loves it. Just thought I’d share. Check it out!

Tournaments

My school is currently involved in a mini tournament circuit. We have participants competing in Florida at the time of this post. I personally do not prefer doing tournaments over fighting but my instructor’s outlook about them makes sense. While tournaments are by no means a large focus of our studio, my sensei’s reasoning for them is sound:

  1. The spirit of competition is healthy
  2. Being able to perform under pressure/stress is very beneficial to self-defense situations
  3. Persevering despite making mistakes builds character
  4. Being courageous is not the absence of fear, but the act of continuing despite it
  5. Sets a specific goal/time-line to be worked towards.Builds focus
  6. Sparring. Helps overcome the fear of pain, (getting struck)
  7. There is much to be learned  from losing.  Develops  good  attitude
  8. Preserves the basics
  9. Just plain fun!
